The Best Playdough Recipe
This is our go-to homemade playdough recipe, and it's one that you can easily make with your kids! The best part is that little ones can help with the measuring and dumping, making it a great low-stakes practice activity for math skills.
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- Food coloring
Instructions
I like to premeasure all the ingredients into separate containers so the kids can help dump them into the pot. This gives them ownership of the process and sneaks in some measuring practice!
Combine all dry ingredients in a medium saucepan. Add water, oil, and food coloring. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pot.
Let it cool, then knead until smooth. Store in an airtight container — it lasts for weeks!
We use our homemade playdough for everything from letter practice to counting activities to pure imaginative play. It's softer and smoother than store-bought, and the kids love knowing they helped make it.
